Windows are a very important part of your home.   Different styles of windows can change the overall look of your home.  The different styles add different looks for your home, and also have different functions.

One type of a window is called a bay or bow window.  These types of windows create great views and make a room feel bigger than it actually is.  There is usually one big window in the middle that is fixed  and window that open on either side.  The side windows are usually set at a 30 or 45 degree angle.  One drawback is that this type of window can be more expensive and more complicated to install.

Another type of window is an Awning.  This type of window looks like a crankout window (called casement windows) on its side.  It opens from the bottom  This type of window is not that popular, and makes up a small percentage of windows installed in a home.  An awning window keeps water out better than other windows.  These window are sometimes found above kitchen sinks.

Picture windows are the third type of windows that we will talk about.  A picture window is made to show off a great view that a home has.  They are also the most efficient window, because they do not open.  To get ventitation, there must be other windows that can open next to the picture window.  These windows can be made in a variety of size and shapes.

The type of window that is most common in the midwest in the double-hung window.  This type of window has two sashes in a singe frame.   Both sashes can be tilted out for easy cleaning.  It is a very simple design that can fit in almost any area.

A very popular window design is the casment window.  This type of window has a single sash that is hinged and cranks out, thus the term crank out windows.  These windows can catch a breeze to increase air flow in your home.  They also usually have less air leakage than other windows.  One problem is that these windows open out and can get in the way of things outside, especially if they are above a deck.
